To promote student voices, we are hosting a Civics Award Competition and accepting submissions in the following sections: Visual arts, critical essay, creative writing, musical instrument, and song. Submissions should be emailed to cjiang24@lawrenceville.org and tgupta25@lawrenceville.org no later than October 31st, by 8:00 pm.

Competition theme: “Using your voice”

General Questions:

  • What does democracy mean to you? What does democracy look like in other parts of the world?

  • What acts of participation (other than voting) can be used to empower one another and drive change?

Guiding prompts:

  • Why should and why do we vote?

  • How does voting provide individuals’ voices in government? Why is this important?

  • Despite the vast inequalities and different backgrounds Americans come from, many say that voting is the best equalizer. Do you think this is true? Why? Why not?

  • How is voting in America unequal and insufficient in recognizing all the voices in our democracy?

  • How does giving citizens the right to vote change the way a society functions?

  • Do you think voting helps protect our Constitutional rights? Why or why not?

  • Does voting hold politicians accountable?

  • How is the voting process in America different from those around the world?
